What You Need to Know Before Renewing Your Builders Licence
CPD Points for Builders is a training provider offering Category 1 CPD courses for licensed builders and swimming pool builders in NSW. For several years, we have provided flexible, self-paced online learning through read-only course materials, allowing builders to develop their knowledge at a time and place that suits them, without tests or quizzes.
Builders licence renewal in NSW involves more than paying a renewal fee. Individual licensed builders and swimming pool builders must complete 12 CPD points each year and declare that they have met their CPD obligations when renewing. You should keep certificates and supporting learning records as evidence, ensure your licence details are current, and submit your renewal application and payment before the expiry date. Whether your licence runs for one, three or five years, CPD remains an annual requirement, so it’s important to plan your learning throughout the licence term
CPD helps builders stay informed about construction practices, legislation, safety, contracts and business management. When renewing your licence, you must declare whether you have met your CPD obligations. Keep certificates and supporting records available, as Building Commission NSW may request evidence during an audit.
Planning your learning throughout the year makes renewal easier and gives you time to choose courses relevant to your work. Your CPD should support your ongoing development, rather than become something you only consider when your renewal notice arrives.
Category 1 CPD for Builders Working on Class 1 Homes
Builders working on Class 1 residential buildings can complete eligible Category 1 courses towards their annual CPD requirement.
Eligible activities earn one CPD point per hour and must meet NSW requirements, including relevant subject matter, identifiable learning outcomes and participation. Courses can cover technical construction issues, sustainability, compliance, communication, dispute resolution, contracts, safety and business management.
Category 1 courses offer a flexible learning option, although builders can also earn points through other eligible activities. Separate practitioner CPD requirements may apply if you hold registration under the Design and Building Practitioners scheme.
CPD Across Different Licence Terms
NSW contractor licences are available for one, three or five years. Regardless of your licence term, the requirement remains 12 CPD points each year.
This generally means 12 points across one year, 36 across three years and 60 across five years, subject to applicable carry-forward rules. Learning must be completed in the relevant annual periods; completing everything immediately before renewal does not replace earlier annual obligations.
Check Your CPD Requirements
Use our CPD Checker to estimate your requirements. Enter your current licence issue date, usually corresponding to your last renewal, and expiry date. Compare the estimate with your completed learning records, including any eligible carried-forward points.
