Category 1 Courses for Class 1 Builders
CPD Points for Builders is a training provider offering Category 1 CPD courses for licensed builders and swimming pool builders in NSW. For several years, we have provided flexible, self-paced online learning through read-only course materials, allowing builders to develop their knowledge at a time and place that suits them, without tests or quizzes.
Category 1 CPD courses help NSW licensed builders and swimming pool builders maintain and develop knowledge relevant to their work. Continuing Professional Development supports better construction practices, business management and understanding of industry responsibilities.
NSW builders and swimming pool builders must complete 12 CPD points each year. Under the NSW Government’s builders’ CPD guidance, eligible learning in the one-point-per-hour category earns 1 CPD point for each hour completed. Activities must relate to recognised CPD topics, have an identifiable learning outcome, involve participation and be delivered by someone with specialist industry expertise, or a education company.
For reading-based online courses, the time spent reading and understanding the material forms part of the learning duration.
A two-hour eligible learning activity earns two CPD points. Providers should establish realistic course durations based on the time an average participant needs to understand the content.
CPD Points for Builders groups its course materials into four main areas:
- Home and Construction Basics: Practical topics covering waterproofing, insulation, concrete slabs, windows compliance, construction systems, home orientation, heating and cooling.
- Leadership and Personal Development: Learning focused on leadership, organisation, goal setting, work-life balance, cybersecurity and communicating with project stakeholders.
- Legal and Compliance: Topics including home building laws, employment law, building defects, dispute resolution, workplace bullying, workers compensation, safe work method statements and the Building Code of Australia.
- Business and Marketing: Resources covering project management, business documents, sales strategies, websites, SEO, social media, project evaluation and payment protection.
These subject areas allow builders to choose learning relevant to their projects, business needs and professional development priorities.
Builders should retain certificates and supporting records of completed activities. Category 1 builders’ CPD should also be distinguished from the separate approved CPD requirements applying to registered building practitioners under the Design and Building Practitioners scheme.
